HELPING OTHERS TO
HELP THEMSELVES
TEACHERS LEARN HOW
TO BALANCE THEIR LIVES!

Jenn’s great, great grandmother Esther
Spitz used to teach rug hooking, and make soap and homemade noodles on the
ancestral farm in Wisconsin. The whole family grew up learning things about
life and love from Grandma Spitz who was blessed with the gift of teaching
and knew about the “balance in life” before it was a buzz phrase.
One day Jenn and her mother (two former
teachers who were burned out with the corporate world), mixed up a batch of
soap while “thinking outside the box.” They had been looking for some way
that they could work at home and still be good wives and mothers. So they
had started with Grandma’s soap recipe, but substituted plant oil for the
animal fat in the recipe and they were very pleased with the result.

The main ingredients in their soaps are
olive oil and soybean oil (a Wisconsin cash crop) and they found it lathers
well and is so gentle for their skin that they also developed a hand and
body cream. And one of my favorites is the
“Ah! 24-7 Relief” cream. It soothes my minor aches and pains as well as
my tendonitis. |

Jenn Kane and Jillayne Waite went on to
create their all natural line of products for “bath, body, backyard and
beyond” They named their company
Cedar Creek after the creek that ran through the farm where Jenn grew
up. The farm was a place where wonderful childhood memories were created as
they wandered in the woods, played in the hayloft and learned to ride.

But most of all, the farm was a place
where everyone learned about life and what it means to be a family and where
they learned about values and work ethics. These concepts carry over into
their workplace and at
Cedar Creek everyone works part-time (including family and employees) so
they can balance their work and family lives just as Grandma Spitz did - and
everyone gets benefits. The entire group works together to plan the monthly
schedule and no one has a title.

At
Cedar Creek, they believe that making a quality product will ensure
their future and maintaining a quality work environment will assure the
quality product! They know also that their business depends on their
creativity, flexibility and integrity – a winning recipe!

Along the way the mother/daughter duo realized that they were creating a lot
of soap waste when they trimmed the ends of the soap molds. Still “thinking
outside the box,” they ground it up and sprinkled it around the garden to
keep the deer from eating the flowers!
